A weighted dart on a long rope (~3m), swung and wrapped around the body. One of the oldest flow props — rooted in Chinese martial arts.

Rope dart combines wide circular swings with tight body wraps and stalls. The long reach makes it dramatic but demands space.

Getting started

Start with a soft practice dart (bean bag on a rope). Master the basic buzzsaw and body wraps before adding fire.

Rope dart fire variants need significant open space. The long tether means the danger zone extends 3+ meters in every direction.

DIY — Make your own rope dart

Practice rope dart (10 min, ~5 EUR)

Materials: tennis ball, soft braided rope (3-4m), tape

  1. Poke two holes through the tennis ball (opposite sides)
  2. Thread the rope through both holes
  3. Tie a stopper knot at the ball end
  4. Make an adjustable wrist loop (noose knot) at the other end
  5. Wrap the ball with tape for durability

Fire rope dart (20 min, ~15 EUR)

Materials: kevlar wick, metal dart head or bolt, chain (30cm), quicklinks, rope (3-4m)

  1. Wrap kevlar wick around the metal head, secure with wire
  2. Attach the head to chain via quicklink
  3. Tie the rope to the other end of the chain
  4. Add a swivel between rope and chain to prevent tangles
Rope darts need 3+ meters of clear space in every direction. Practice outdoors only.
