Large fabric wings (semicircular or butterfly-shaped) attached to sticks held in each hand, creating dramatic sweeping visual effects. Originally from belly dance, now popular at festivals with LED lighting.
History
Despite association with Middle Eastern dance, Isis wings trace back to Loie Fuller, an American dancer in the late 1800s who pioneered fabric manipulation with gas lighting. She created special skirts with pockets for rods to extend the fabric. The "Isis wing" name connects to Egyptian goddess imagery popular in cabaret belly dance.
Getting started
- One of the most accessible flow props — the movements are sweeping and dramatic without requiring complex technique
- Hold one stick in each hand, spread your arms to open the wings
- Basic moves include figure-eights, spins, and arm circles
- LED versions are spectacular at night with minimal practice
- Fabric choice matters: silk for flow, organza for transparency, polyester for durability
Key moves
- Full spread — arms wide, wings fully open
- Figure eight — crossing the wings in flowing patterns
- Spin wrap — turning the body while the wings trail dramatically
- Flutter — rapid small movements creating a shimmering effect
Where to buy
- ETEREshop — LED Isis Wings — Belarus, manufacturer, up to 500 LEDs
