Flow Sword

A sword-shaped prop designed for spinning, contact manipulation (rolling on the body), and performance rather than combat. Contact versions are carefully counterweighted for body rolls similar to contact staff.

History

Draws from multiple traditions: raqs al-saif (Arab sword dance) evolved from men's sword fighting in Egypt and Turkey. Chinese sword dance traces to the Han Dynasty. Belly dance adopted sword balancing as a staple prop. Modern flow swords are designed specifically for spinning and contact moves.
