FireLEDContactPractice
A sword-shaped prop designed for spinning, contact manipulation (rolling on the body), and performance rather than combat. Contact versions are carefully counterweighted for body rolls similar to contact staff.
History
Draws from multiple traditions: raqs al-saif (Arab sword dance) evolved from men's sword fighting in Egypt and Turkey. Chinese sword dance traces to the Han Dynasty. Belly dance adopted sword balancing as a staple prop. Modern flow swords are designed specifically for spinning and contact moves.
Types
- Swinging sword — lighter, designed for spinning tricks and aerials
- Contact sword — counterweighted handle, designed for body rolls like contact staff
- Fire sword — Kevlar-wrapped blade for fire performance
- LED pixel sword — programmable LED displays, collapsible for transport
Getting started
- If you know contact staff, the contact sword will feel familiar
- Swinging moves are more accessible than contact rolling
- Balance and counterweighting are critical for contact versions
- Belly dance sword balancing (on the head) is a related but distinct skill
