Fire fingersPalm torches

Short torches that attach to individual fingertips or small wick balls that sit in the palm, making fire an extension of the hands. Both allow fire dancing without holding a separate prop.

History

Rooted in Middle Eastern fire dance traditions. Connected to Shamadan (candelabra dance) and Seneeya (tray balancing with candles) in belly dance. Fire dancing has ancient roots across cultures — from Aztec fire rituals to Medieval European traveling performers.

Types

  • Fire fingers — thin Kevlar-wicked torches attached to fingertips. Available in 25cm (fast movements) or 38cm (dramatic effect)
  • Palm torches — Kevlar wick balls on flat bases that sit in the palm or strap to the hand

Getting started

  • Many movements transfer from dance and gloving
  • The challenge is fire safety and comfort with flames near skin and hair
  • Always tie hair back securely and wear natural fiber clothing
  • Start with palm torches — they are more stable than finger attachments
  • Practice the movements without fire first until they are second nature
Fire fingers require extra caution due to the proximity of flame to your face and hair. Always have a spotter with a wet towel ready.
