kendama
A Japanese ball-and-cup skill toy. The ball is connected by string to a handle with three cups and a spike. Tricks involve catching the ball in different positions.
Kendama has a huge competitive scene with standardised trick ladders. It's portable, meditative, and endlessly challenging.
Getting started
Learn the big cup catch first, then small cup, then spike. The key is bending your knees — use your legs, not your arms.
DIY
Kendama requires wood turning skills. Most players buy manufactured kendamas.
What to buy:
- Starter kendama: ~15-25 EUR (Krom, Sweets, or Ozora brands)
- Sticky paint (matte finish) helps with balance tricks
- Replace the string regularly — it frays
Customise: Sand and repaint the ball with acrylic paint and clear coat for a unique look.
