Wraps

Technique

Wraps (also called recoils) involve intentionally wrapping the poi tether around a body part — arm, leg, wrist, waist, neck — then unwrapping to redirect momentum, often reversing direction.

Types

  • Bicep wrap — tether wraps around the upper arm
  • Wrist wrap — quick wrap around the wrist
  • Waist wrap — poi circles the entire torso before unwinding
  • Leg wrap — wrapping around an outstretched leg
  • Neck wrap — advanced, wrapping around the neck

How to learn

  1. Start with a basic bicep wrap — during a forward swing, cross one poi so it wraps once around the opposite arm
  2. The poi snaps to a stop as the tether goes taut
  3. Pull slightly to release — the poi uncoils and shoots off in the reverse direction
  4. Practice with soft poi first

Applies to

Poi (primary), rope dart, meteor, nunchaku, contact staff (wrist wraps).
