Weaves

Technique

A weave is a pattern where the poi crosses from one side of the body to the other in alternating passes. The "beat" number refers to how many times the poi passes a reference point on each side before crossing back.

Types

  • 2-beat weave — the simplest. Two passes per side. Also called a "windmill" when done around the head. Beginner level.
  • 3-beat weave — the classic weave. Three passes per side. The first big milestone for most poi spinners. Beginner/Intermediate.
  • 5-beat weave — five passes per side with wider arm crossing. Advanced.

How to learn

  1. Start with the butterfly (same-time same-direction forward circles)
  2. Practice crossing your arms while spinning — this is the core motion
  3. Begin with 2-beat: cross, cross, uncross, uncross
  4. The 3-beat adds one extra cross on top of the already-crossed arm

Applies to

Primarily poi. Can be adapted to leviwand and rope dart with modifications.
