Contact Rolling

Technique

Rolling a prop across the surface of your body without gripping it, using balance, gravity, and momentum to guide it. The prop maintains constant contact with your skin as it travels.

Common rolls

  • Arm roll — staff or ball rolls from hand to shoulder
  • Neck roll (SNS) — across the back of the neck, shoulder to shoulder
  • Chest roll — across the chest and shoulders
  • Full body roll — combining arm, neck, and back rolls into one continuous flow

How to learn

  1. Start with a well-balanced prop — the balance point is everything
  2. Practice arm rolls first — let the prop roll from hand to elbow and back
  3. Wear fitted clothing — loose fabric catches and stops the roll
  4. The neck roll is the first big milestone in contact work

Applies to

Contact staff (primary, the defining technique), dragon staff, contact poi, hoop, crystal balls (contact juggling).
