Tosses & Catches
TechniqueReleasing the prop into the air as a free-flying object, then catching it to resume spinning. The throw can maintain or reverse rotational energy depending on the catch technique.
Types
- Single toss — releasing and catching the same prop
- Behind-the-back catch — catching without looking
- Palm roll — reversing which end you hold by rolling across the open palm
- Rotational catch — catching to maintain spin direction
How to learn
- Practice the release point — where you let go determines the flight path
- Start with low, controlled tosses
- Track the prop visually until you develop spatial awareness
- For poi: release the handle, let it arc, catch the handle again
Applies to
All props — poi, staff, clubs, hoop, fans, rope dart, juggling balls. This is the defining mechanic of toss juggling but used as an accent move in poi and staff.
