Tangles & Air Wraps

Technique

Tangles are intentional wrapping of the poi tethers around each other (not around body parts — that is a "wrap"). The most basic tangle is the air wrap: the tethers cross in mid-air, the poi rotates once around the tangle point, then automatically untangles.

How it works

  1. Swing both poi in split-time in front of your body
  2. At the crossover point, the tethers meet and wrap around each other
  3. The poi heads briefly orbit the tangle point (like a bolas)
  4. Guide the nexus to the other side where the tethers naturally unwind

Progression

  • Basic air wrap — wall-plane tangle that self-untangles after two beats. Intermediate.
  • Hyperloop — the wrapped poi transitions through a plane change before untangling. Advanced.
  • Orbital — sustained tangle with fast gyroscopic spinning. Advanced.

Applies to

Poi exclusively — requires two separate tethers.
