Clothing & Hair Safety

Safety

What you wear during fire performance can be the difference between a minor incident and a trip to the hospital.

Fabric safety ranking

  1. Aramid fibers (Kevlar, Nomex) — most fire-protective. Will not melt. Used by professional stunt performers and firefighters.
  2. Natural fibers (100% cotton, wool, denim, leather) — recommended for most performers. Will char but will not melt.
  3. Synthetic fibers (polyester, rayon, spandex, nylon) — DANGEROUS. These melt, drip, and produce toxic fumes. Melted fabric adheres to skin, causing severe burns. Never wear near fire.

Clothing guidelines

  • Wear fitted clothing — loose, flowing fabric can catch on spinning props
  • Avoid fringe, tassels, scarves, and bell sleeves
  • Tighter weaves and thicker fabrics provide more protection
  • Closed-toe shoes are essential — fuel drips and hot debris fall on feet
  • Remove jewelry — metal conducts heat and can snag on props

Hair safety

  • Tie long hair in a tight bun or braid — hair is one of the most common things to catch fire
  • Avoid all flammable hair products (hairspray, gel, oil-based products) before performing
  • Optionally dampen hair to reduce flammability
  • Use a hat, bandana, or headwrap for additional protection
