The Flow Arts Movement

History

Flow arts as a unified movement is surprisingly young. The term only gained traction in the 2000s.

Timeline

  • Pre-2000 — individual disciplines existed separately. Jugglers at conventions, poi spinners at raves, hoopers at festivals. No common identity.
  • 1998 — Home of Poi launches. First major online community connecting spinners worldwide.
  • 2000s — "flow arts" emerges to unite poi, staff, hoop, fans under one umbrella. Festivals begin hosting dedicated flow spaces.
  • 2010s — LED technology transforms the art form. Props become programmable light shows.
  • 2020s — the community matures. Dedicated conventions, professional performers, global network of schools and communities.
